Almost Half Of America Feels Lonely- Do You?

Almost half of America feels lonely- Do you?

Human connection is crucial to our health. When someone mentions loneliness, the first thing you might think of is someone being alone. Many Americans report being lonely while having a variety of relationships. Loneliness manifests in more complicated ways than a feeling or the act of being alone. Robin Williams has said, “I used to think the worst thing in life was to end up alone. It’s not. The worst thing in life is to end up with people who make you feel alone.”

Loneliness is, unfortunately, linked to suicide and many life-threatening diseases. Some of these diseases include heart disease, depression, and Alzheimer’s disease. Isolation is as destructive as smoking 15 cigarettes a day and is worse for our physical beings than the obesity epidemic. AARP reports Medicare spends more money on socially isolated older adults. About 6.7 billion federal dollars every year compared to their counterparts.

These stats were all before the COVID-19 Pandemic.
